Students in fifth grade will be expected to pass SOL’s in Math, Science, Reading, Writing, and Social Studies. We will be using cooperative learning, reviews, games, and a variety of instructional settings to help them achieve this goal.
The fifth grade mathematics program will consist of the use of the Everyday Math program. We will emphasize basic facts, geometry, fractions, and problem solving.
The Social Studies focus is Virginia Studies. We will be learning about the founding of Williamsburg, the important people and places in Virginia during the Revolutionary War and Civil War, and other important events and figures in Virginia History. Our study will also investigate Virginia government, geography, and economics.
In Science, we will start by learning how to be scientists. Our first unit will emphasize how scientists classify organisms. We will learn about the five kingdoms and basic cell structure. Other science units will include oceans, matter, earth movement and rocks, light and sound. We will use scientific investigation and hands-on activities throughout the year.
In Language Arts, we will be using the 6+1 Traits of Writing. Students will focus on refining their ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. The reading component will consist of literature-based activities using reading strategies to address individual student needs.
