The
first grade language arts program is based on six thematic
units, including "Good Times We Share", Favorite Things
Old and New", and "Surprise Me!"
The first grade math program provides
for continual reinforcement and growth of basic skills
including number
sense, telling
time, and working with money. The children often
team with partners or small groups to play games, which
were developed to target specific math concepts.
In social studies, our first graders learn
a variety of concepts that relate to history, geography,
economics,
and civics. The use of maps, globes, timelines, and
historical biographies helps expand the children's view
of the world and make connections between past and present
life. We also emphasize citizenship qualities such
as honesty, kindness, and responsibility.
The first grade science program provides
many opportunities for hands on activities and simple
experiments while
the children investigate basic concepts related to their
world. Plants,
animals, weather, earth and sun are just some of the
topics we explore.
Homework in first grade emphasizes family
participation while reinforcing important reading, writing,
and math
skills. Children are encouraged to read and share
books with family members nightly.
At Windsor Oaks, the first grade year is also enriched
with frequent visits to the library and computer lab, lessons
with the gifted resource teacher, and field trips that
support our standards of learning.
