Dear Parents:
This is our first communication to you via our “youngest gets” project. We are sending only one bulletin per family, and we are sending it with the youngest child. (Our thinking is that parents of the younger children are in the habit of going through the backpacks each night. As a school, we are attempting to be “greener” and use less paper !!! Also, please don’t wait for a Conference Day when you feel the need to communicate with our teaching staff- a stitch in time saves nine, so communicate with your child’s teacher at the first sign of trouble! J
Please note the following upcoming dates of importance….
- February 16 Presidents’ Day, but the students will have school!!
- February 19- Cici’s Night (at Lynnhaven Mall) for Windsor Oaks!
- February 20- *** BINGO NIGHT AT WINDSOR OAKS ***
- February 23- PTA General Mtg in cafeteria, 7 PM . (Founders’ Day!!)
- March 4- DARE Graduation for Grade 4, 9:00 AM
- March 9- Progress Reports issued.
- March 13- Family Game Night at Windsor Oaks!! (Watch for flier)
- April 10-19 Spring Vacation, schools closed.
- April 28- Registration for next year’s kindergartners!!! (9:00 AM in cafeteria)
- Don’t forget to monitor the school website, at www.windsoroakses@vbschools.com
- We participate in the federally sponsored free and reduced meal program. The application is EXTREMELY easy to complete and we keep its information in the strictest of confidence. If you would like an application, please call Mrs. Faircloth in the school office (648-4120).
- Parents, we appreciate very much your coming to school and volunteering- we’re very dependent on those extra pairs of hands!! But… help us with a problem that has arisen: please restrict your travels to the areas where you are volunteering. This isn’t the time to seek out your child’s teacher or to visit the room during instruction.
- HELP!!! Parents, never remove your child from school without properly signing them out through the office.
- Construction of the new Windsor Oaks building continues, and we will begin moving the school office immediately after school lets out in June. We are still comfortably on schedule to fully open for classes in September!
- Be sure to ask your children about Black History Month! We have many, many activities going on every day, both school wide and in the individual classrooms.
- We have scheduled a series of fun (and helpful!) parent nights. We are scheduling them one grade level at a time, and will notify parents of the particulars via the AlertNow system, a week in advance. Meanwhile, please mark your calendars now. Gr. - I know everyone has heard about the budget shortages in the city and with the schools too. Please be assured that Windsor Oaks is not a candidate for closure.
- In February we are recognizing the American Citizenship Principle of Honesty. Please use every opportunity to reinforce this very important concept at home! The students chosen by their classmates as best demonstrating honesty will be honored at the Feb. 23 PTA meeting. If you are notified of your child’s selection, please plan to attend that meeting and recognition ceremony!
- YEARBOOK DEADLINE !! Thursday, March 5 @ 9 AM. They are full color!! Send a check in to the office for $20, made out to Windsor Oaks ES.
- We will administer the SOL Writing Test to Grade 5 on March 3 and 5. Please attempt to avoid scheduling medical appointments on these days. etcetera
- We continue to stress safe bus behavior with your children and we ask that you help us by doing the same. While accidents do happen, many are avoidable by ongoing safety reminders. (When we fuss, THAT’S WHY !!) J
Please take note of the registration/orientation date for next year’s kindergarteners: Tuesday, April 28! (It is once again our hope to provide a full day of kindergarten. We won’t learn for certain that our request will be approved until summertime.

Please make sure that your children have either money in their cafeteria accounts, lunch money with them, or a lunch from home. The cafeteria is entirely self supporting- all expenses including salaries for the cafeteria staff come 100% from payment taken in for the meals they prepare. The cafeteria can advance students two charges, but you can imagine with 520 students how much time is involved every single day with the record keeping, the phone calls, the letters home, and etcetera. Send in a check (in any amount) made out to Windsor Oaks Cafeteria (the entire amount will go into the “meals” account unless you include a note designating a portion of it for the “snack” account). Mrs. Dick will notify your child when their account gets low. Please help us with this. When the children are behind two charges, the cafeteria is not allowed to advance them further- the students are instead provided with a cheese sandwich/milk. Anyone who would like to complete a free/reduced lunch application can obtain one by calling 648-4120 (It is important to note that we keep all information on the applications in the very strictest of confidence.)
