What is PTA? - PTA stands for Parent Teacher Association. The National PTA is the world’s largest and oldest volunteer child advocacy organization in the United States. A not-for-profit organization, National PTA is an association of parents, educators, students, and other citizens active in their schools and communities.

Misson of the PTA:

  • To support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community, and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children;
  • To assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children; and
  • To encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation.

Membership Information

If I don’t have time to volunteer, why should I join Windsor Oaks PTA? - When you become a member of PTA, you increase our collective strength. By adding your name as a member, you will increase the impact we have representing our school and PTA at a regional, state, and national level. Today’s parents are busier than ever. We know everyone can’t volunteer during school hours or volunteer for school events. By becoming a PTA member you are expressing your concern for our children. By joining the PTA, you are getting involved by showing your support!

Studies over the past few decades have proved that children whose parents stay closely involved in their schooling are more successful academically than those whose parents remained uninvolved. They complete more homework, achieve higher grades, have a positive attitude, and generally behave better. More good reasons to get involved!

Who can join the PTA? Everyone! Families, teachers, administrators, staff, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, businesses….can join the PTA.

Does the PTA accept donations? Windsor Oaks gladly accepts donations of time and/or money, special talents, and gifts.

Dues Information

How do I join the PTA? By paying dues of $3.50 per person, you can become a member of Windsor Oaks PTA. All you need to do is complete a PTA membership envelope and enclose your money. Checks should be made payable to Windsor Oaks PTA.

Where does the money go? 100% of the money goes to benefit the children in some way. We use your membership money not only to help support the PTA on a state and national level but also right here in Windsor Oaks to provide our students with beneficial programs as well as educational assemblies and field trips.  Please know all officer positions on the PTA board are strictly voluntary.

Volunteer Opportunities

Bingo: The PTA hosts Bingo on a Friday night. Usually there is pizza served. Fliers go home for pizza orders. Prizes are handed out for winners. Set up is done as soon as the lunches are over if the cafeteria is not being used for anything else. We need volunteers to write down the numbers as they are called. And of course there is clean up. Time commitment in minimal and can be organized from home before the event. Bingo nights usually last two hours at the most.

Book Fair: The school and PTA hosts book fairs. Helping out with the book fair could include setting up, walking around during the fair to make sure things are neat and assisting students in book selection, check-out or cashiering and of course clean-up. Time commitment is high during the fairs and we need a lot of volunteers.

Holiday Breakfast: This event takes place on a Saturday. Helpers are needed as early as 7am to help set up last minute items in the cafeteria. Helpers are needed to serve the food. We also would need assistant where we have a separate area selling pastries. Santa comes and sits for pictures and wishes. We need several volunteers to help with picture taking, assisting Santa, and passing out the developed pictures. We have a Santa shop and would need volunteers to assist with the sales (People would be paying with tickets.) We have a craft table and would need volunteers assisting the students with the craft. We need volunteers for the gift wrapping table. We need someone to assist with the cake walk. Other activities may be added this year also. This event 9-11AM.

Testing Monitors: The school has testing for several grades. This would include standard testing and SOL testing. This usually is in the fall and the spring. Volunteers are needed to sit outside classrooms to monitor the halls to make sure they are quiet, to take children to the bathroom, or to help the testing proctor in any way that is needed. This task takes between 2-3 hours depending on how long the kids take to complete the tests.

Reflections: Every year there is a state wide art contest surrounding a single predetermined theme. Students may submit art in the form of music, drawing/painting, poetry/essay or photography to depict the theme. The art is judged on the school level and then sent to the city and state levels thereafter. Volunteers are needed to send out the initial letter announcing the theme, send out the rules packet to families that wish to participate, maintain the program until the deadline for submission. Gather a panel of judges and pass the winning entries on to the city level. There is a ceremony to celebrate all of the winners and entries. Help for this ceremony could include setting up and cleaning up. We also need volunteers to bake some goodies to serve. Time commitment is concentrated to the window the program runs in the fall. If you love the arts, this is the place to put your talents.

Founders Day Dinner: This is the first year that we will have this. This dinner is to celebrate the founding of the PTA-the national PTA, not just ours. For this day we have a dinner at the school on a Monday night. Dinners are catered and pre-purchased. Help is needed to assist setting up, serving, cleaning up and other miscellaneous tasks. Time commitment is usually about 2 hours.

Ice Cream Social: The ice cream social is in June when we have the book fair and we will have a raffle of class baskets. Each class will be asked to pick a theme and solicit donations from the parents in that class. The room parent then takes the donated items and puts them together in some sort of a container-depending on the theme- and the baskets are put on display at the front of the cafeteria starting right after lunch on the day of the social. We need volunteers to help scoop ice cream and assist with putting on the toppings. We also need people to take the tickets at the door. During the social tickets are placed in eh box in front of the baskets and at the end of the social all of the boxes are collected and the winners are drawn right then. You do not have to be present to win. When tickets are bought, the name of the purchaser is written on the back. The baskets are phenomenal and the kids just love being a part of the whole thing!

Art: In March, we have Fine Arts Month. The art teacher needs assistance putting up artwork for every student in the school.

Music: In December, we have a holiday show. The music teachers usually need volunteers to help with costumes.

Baking: We sell baked items at every PTA meeting to help get to 100% membership.

Copying: There is so much information from the PTA that needs to go home to families! We need volunteers to copy the fliers that will go home for each PTA event.

DARE: Drug Abuse Resistance Education is the drug awareness program mainly focusing on the 4 th graders. There is a teacher representative and someone appointed to our school from law enforcement. People are needed to work with the faculty and law enforcement members to distribute information and incentives. Time commitment is minimal.

Labels for Education: We are very active in this program and we need people to help sort, count and maintain the vast amount of labels and receipts that our families turn in. This is a year round program.

Library: Our librarians need volunteers to organize and put away books, assist with displays, processing and special projects. Volunteers may also be trained to use the circulation system and assist checking books in or out and helping students locate library books. In May and June we need volunteers to assist with inventory.

Picture Day: We take student pictures once in the fall and again in the spring. We need volunteers to help assist the photographer with the student’s appearances.

Field Day: In June, we have a field day. We need a variety of volunteers to assist with manning events and distributing refreshments.

Teacher Appreciation Week: We need volunteers to bake desserts so PTA can show our appreciation to our teachers during this week.

Reading: We need volunteers to come in to the school on a needed basis and sit with children and read to them and also have students read to you. Teachers may also like for you to come in and read to the entire class.

Accelerated Reader: We need volunteers to assist with the monthly AR breakfast. In May or June we host the AR Lunch Time Picnic. We need volunteers to serve food, set up, and clean up.
